Adia had originally bought the green dress to wear at her college graduation. Or rather, her mother had bought it, concerned that her daughter would grab the first drab thing hanging in the store and call it a day. The dress was long-sleeved and without adornment, but the bodice fit her nicely and the satin material added a bit of flair to the A-line hem.

“You look beautiful,” She told her in the dressing room. “Emerald green is a lovely color on you.”

Adia examined herself in the mirror, turning this way and that, the fabric swishing pleasantly against her legs. It did look lovely on her, which was part of the problem. “I don’t know… it’s awfully pricey, Mom, and I’m only going to wear it once.”

“This is my treat, sweetie.” Her mother stood behind her, putting her hands on her shoulders and smiling at her daughter’s reflection. “Besides, you can wear it to parties.”

Adia met her mother’s encouraging gaze in the mirror and smiled weakly. “Sure, Mom… parties.”

She didn’t wear the dress again for a variety of reasons: it was too fancy for an event, or not fancy enough, or she didn’t have the right shoes to go with it. Some were valid excuses, some not, but it wasn’t as if she was attending many parties in the first place.

The day before she was boarding the Chiron, her mother came over to help her pack. “How come you never wear this?” She asked while rifling through Adia’s closet and coming across the infamous green dress, hanging in the back with her off-season clothes. She pulled it out and waved it at Adia like a banner. “You should take this with you in case there’s a special occasion.”

“Mom, I’m going to be on a spaceship.” Adia took the dress by its hanger and put it back in the closet. “They don’t have those kinds of parties.”

“I think you should take it anyway, you never know.” She watched her daughter wilt at the suggestion and sighed gently. “Adia… you are so beautiful, inside and out. You’re kind, and smart, and you have so much love to give. But no one is going to know that if they never meet you in the first place. Please take the dress. For me? Some day there will be a very special party and you’ll want to wear it.”

Adia couldn’t say no to that, as difficult as it was to believe. “Okay. I’ll bring the dress.”

A Halloween party in the Nexus sounded like the kind of thing that she’d skip back home, but she didn’t really have a home anymore, and Josh was so excited about the party, it would be rude not to go.

She looked through her belongings, trying to find inspiration for a costume. She liked the idea of dressing as Medusa, but what could she wear aside from a wig of snakes?

Her hands brushed against the satiny fabric of her green party dress and she lifted it out of her trunk. Untouched by the grit and grime of New Caprica, it looked as vibrant as it did the day she wore it at her graduation. It wasn’t a classical Medusa outfit, but it was green, and it looked nice on her.

She couldn’t think of any reason not to wear it, so she decided that she would. Just this once.

Her mother would have been proud.
