Spring socializing. ((Open to anyone.))

It has been a long winter, made longer by the fact that Adia could not reach any of her friends in the Nexus. When spring arrives and her PINpoint starts working again, she wastes little time in sending out a message.
Hello! This is Adia. Caspar and I were locked out of the Nexus until now. Please reply if you get this message and let me know how you're doing and if there's anything I can get you?
In the interest of efficiency, she sends it as a blind carbon copy to most of her Contact List.
((Feel free to tag once, play out a thread, or handwave your muse's reponse. Also, if you want me to know specifically that Adia can't/won't get a message, feel free to share. :) ))

Date: 2019-04-13 04:09 pm (UTC)Adia and Caspar don't keep her waiting long. Caspar is in a suit, as usual, and has talked Adia into wearing something floral for the occasion. Her hair is done up in a waterfall braid, mostly so Caspar could show off.
There's also the ring on her finger, but one thing at a time. First, she needs to return that hug, perhaps a little needier than usual, although she lets go before she makes Amelia uncomfortable. "Me, too. We were so worried."
Caspar smiles at Amelia, looking far more relaxed than the last time she saw him. He slides into the booth and comments, "It was a long winter. Glad that's over with."

Date: 2019-04-18 05:23 pm (UTC)"I am as well. I spent most of my time either in my apartment or the library. I could barely get anywhere in the snow and wind." But that's all past them now, and the rogue is quite ready to move on from it.
"I haven't ordered yet," she informs them as she waves a waitress off. Ordering can wait a few minutes while they catch up and get a chance to decide on what they'd like as a group. "But I want to hear all about your engagement. Adia said something about getting on your knees?" A beat, and she laughs softly. "Or something like that." Sorry, Caspar and Adia, but that's one of the many human traditions Amelia has simply never been exposed to in her life.

Date: 2019-04-18 07:59 pm (UTC)"Just one knee," Caspar clarifies. He grins at Adia sidelong. "Although I would have gotten on both knees, if that's what it took." She laughs, blushing a little as she nudges him in the side, which only seems to bolster his amusement. "It's a tradition where we're from. The person proposing gets on one knee and presents the ring. Did you see the ring? Adia, show her."
Adia dutifully holds out her hand, still blushing, but looking pleased by the opportunity. She's not one to show off, but she really loves her engagement ring, and so does Caspar, the way he sits there all proud of himself.

Date: 2019-04-20 05:38 pm (UTC)The ring is a wonderful distraction from her questions and thoughts about the traditions around proposing, though. She smiles brightly as she takes careful hold of Adia's hand, looking over the sparkling ring with its bright oranges with a palpable excitement. This is another part of the marriage tradition that people of Earth follow that she simply doesn't understand (though a few have attempted to explain it to her in the past), but it's one she can appreciate much more easily. A gift of some kind seems to be a common thread in traditions surrounding marriage in a great many cultures the rogue has encountered.
"It's beautiful. I've never seen anything like it." She smiles at Adia and then at Caspar as she releases Adia's hand, her lips tugging up into a grin as she sees the look on his face. Your excitement about your choice is very obvious, friend. "How did you choose something like this? Is there some significance to it?"

Date: 2019-04-21 01:32 pm (UTC)Caspar stays silent on the matter. He has his own reasons for getting on one knee, all of them deeply personal: A promise, a posture of vulnerability, a way to look up to Adia literally. It's why he was so comfortable with such a human tradition.
Anyway, the ring. Another tradition he was excited about, because he was able to give Adia an expensive gift and now everybody knows she's engaged. "Hunter made it," he explains. "A friend of ours in the Nexus. There's tulip pulp mixed into the band."
"The orange sapphires are for orange tulips," Adia adds, not putting her hand back down just yet. She's admiring how it sparkles in the light. "And the band is the same sheen as the alloy that makes Centurions." She wiggles her fingers and grins. "The diamonds are there to be fancy. Just like Caspar."
"Hey." The Cylon blushes and tugs at his tie. "Diamonds are a classic. Don't knock a classic."
"Of course not." She leans in and kisses him cheek, then smiles at Amelia hopefully. "Can we order now? I've really missed a good slice of pizza."

Date: 2019-04-21 05:29 pm (UTC)"Usually it's simply agreed to between two people," she begins slowly. "Gifts are exchanged, but they have to have deep meaning to the people getting married. It's tradition that a gift represents what a person feels the other will bring not only to their life but the life the two of them are building together. For example, my father knew he would be inheriting the spice trading business my grandfather started eventually, so to show his dedication to including my mother and involving her in every step going forward, he had a custom ledger created for her. It was a beautifully crafted, leather-bound ledger that had symbols representing the both of them etched into the cover, but the true point was that pages inside were empty and he wanted her to help fill them."
It makes her smile to think of the gift now. It's been such a long time since she's told that particular story. Her mother was so proud of the work she'd done in that very book, and her father was ecstatic that she'd accepted and answered his call to stand at his side and not behind him.
As she shakes her head to clear away memories of the past, she laughs softly to herself. "Only some of this applies if the marriage is arranged by family, though. Gifts are often skipped in that case unless the couple to be married have known each other and been close for a long time. It's difficult to gift someone anything with true value and meaning if there's no connection between the giver and the receiver."
Mention of Hunter, and all of the small touches he included in the ring, make Amelia's smile widen. "Hunter makes beautiful art. I'm so glad he was able to make something that speaks to the both of you like this." That's the true reason to give a gift in the end, isn't it?
"Yes please," the rogue laughs in answer to Adia's question. "Did you want to have the same as last time we were here? Pepperoni, oregano, and basil, I believe it was? We can look at the menu for other options as well." Amelia may not be the most adventurous of pizza consumers, but she's enjoyed everything she's tried so far. If her friends have a suggestion, the rogue is happy to follow their lead.

Date: 2019-04-22 12:37 am (UTC)Caspar nods slightly in agreement. A ledger does not have quite the same oomph as a ring, in his opinion, but he has to agree that it's a loving gesture regardless. "I suppose I proposed ages ago when I built our shared wardrobe," he gently teases Adia, who laughs softly at the comparison. "Or a new centrifuge, maybe? Our lab could use one of those."
"No, I think the ring is just fine," she replies with a giggle. "Is gift-giving important across the board, Amelia? I know how much thought you put into yours."
As for Hunter, she looks pleasantly surprised that Amelia knows him. "Yes, he does. It means a lot that he made it for us. How do you know him, Amelia?"
Pizza! Adia feels herself salivate a little at the prospect and swallows in embarrassment. She must be hungrier than she thought. "Those sound good to me. Caspar, are you okay with that?"
"Sure. I'm only going to have a slice or two." He smirks. "Don't tell Princess."

Date: 2019-04-25 05:02 pm (UTC)She nods in answer to Adia's question about gifts. "On my world, there's a tradition of giving gifts for meaningful occasions. Birthday, anniversaries, betrothals or engagements, and the rare celebrations that are similar to holidays on places like Earth. The idea of giving a gift simply because you want to isn't really done. It could be, but no one thinks about doing so." She shrugs a bit and smiles. "I like giving things to people I care about, so I always take the time to find something that they'll appreciate for as long as it lasts. Giving impractical gifts can be a challenge, but sometimes a gift stands out easily enough for me to choose it. Like the solar system painting I gave the two of you." That's one gift in particular she's very proud of having found.
"I met Hunter on the Plaza early last year. I was looking for advice and he was kind enough to stop and answer my question." Her smile warms as she thinks about the artist and all of the beautiful things he described to her when they spoke. "I'm glad he took the commission for the two of you. His work speaks for itself."
With their pizza chosen, Amelia flags down the waitress to get their pizza order in, her ginger ale replenished, and drink orders for her friends taken. The cheery, middle-aged woman seems to be very excited at having customers again, because the drinks are all back at the table in what feels like seconds. Amelia thanks the woman with a soft laugh then indulges in a long sip of her ginger ale with a content sigh.
"So," the rogue begins after everyone's had a sip of their drink, "I know this may seem sudden, but now that Winter's over and you were kind enough to invite me into your home, would you like to see mine when we're done with lunch? It's not as large and I can't promise it's as well kept as your cabin, but I feel the two of you are the best people to share my home with in its more finished form before I share it with anyone else." It's something they talked about before, but Amelia's very excited to show her friends what she's done with the things they gave her. Adia taught her how to keep her home clean and their gift of flatware has made it easier for the rogue to make sense of cooking for herself. Making her apartment into a home took time, but the couple sitting across the table from her helped make the idea a reality for her.

Date: 2019-04-28 01:11 am (UTC)"That doesn't sound too different from our own," Adia notes. "Although it's not uncommon for someone to give someone that they care about a gift just because." She glances at Caspar briefly, who puts on an expression of false innocence. "The solar system painting is lovely, by the way. I forget sometimes that we're living on an actual Earth, but seeing the other planets is a good reminder."
"Weird how none of the rest of them are habitable," Caspar remarks as an aside. But that's a thought for another time, because the waitress is here and taking their order. She comes back with an iced tea and a lemonade, for Caspar and Adia, respectively.
"He's very kind," Adia agrees, in regards to Hunter. "Caspar acted as a kind of bodyguard while Hunter sold his merchandise in the Nexus, and Hunter offered the ring commission in return. He was a little nervous after... well..."
"He has a bad habit of being attacked by witches," Caspar interjects. "I made sure nobody messed with him while he worked." Of course, nothing came of it, which he's vaguely disappointed about, but it made Hunter feel better.
Adia's eyes light up at the offer to see Amelia's apartment. "We'd love to," she replies as soon as Amelia is done asking. "Especially now that you've made it your own."
Caspar nods in agreement while he takes another sip of iced tea. He's genuinely curious what Amelia has done with the place. Based on the way Adia had described her initial visit, he had been half-tempted to go there and clean everything himself. If there's one thing he can't stand, (other than the subjugation of sentient robotic life forms), is a dirty home.

Date: 2019-05-06 06:18 pm (UTC)The rogue nods as the couple explain their connection to Hunter, and remind her of the incident with the witches. "Sometimes having someone you know and trust watch over you is all you need to feel safest," she comments with a small smile. "It's good that the two of you were able to find a balance that worked out so well." Hunter got someone to watch over him and Caspar got the gift he'd been dreaming of for Adia. A winning situation for all.
Amelia exhales a happy, relieved sigh when Adia accepts the invitation on her and Caspar's behalf. "It's still mostly the same," she comments, wanting to make sure Adia doesn't get her hopes up about it being some kind of resplendent place now, "but I've been replacing some of the things that were given to me when I moved in. I also got a small bookshelf to house all the books from the library that I borrow on a regular basis." Speaking of which...
Her cheeks flush a light pink as she adds, "I'm there even more often than I was before. I spent a lot of my time during the Winter in the library, in part to do research and in part because I couldn't always get back to my apartment at the end of the day. After I started helping several people find their books and... not get physical after being cooped up for days at a time," because fighting in a library isn't something even she can condone, "the librarians offered me a part-time position when I went back after Spring came. It's nothing extravagant, but I get to continue my research if no one needs my help finding something."
The job feels much like what she did the first few years she was learning the ins and outs of her family's business on her world. Helping people is the easy part and now that the hard part of learning where everything usually is in the library is done? It feels natural to simply take up the mantle of an assistant.

Date: 2019-05-08 01:04 pm (UTC)Amelia's comment makes Adia wonder who's watching out for her friend. She has a feeling the rogue takes on the role of protector more often than not, but everyone needs someone to look out of them.
But that's a thought for another time. Amelia has grown so much over the winter, and despite her protests that she hasn't done that much to change the apartment, Adia smiles, clearly excited to see what it looks like today. Her smile only grows when Amelia confesses that she has a job at the Grand Library, too. "Oh! That's great news. I can't think of a better place to work, honestly." In the Nexus, at least. She's very happy with her career, but spending all her working hours in a library sounds like an excellent runner-up.
Caspar has much the same opinion, although he wouldn't want to help anyone. Just let him shelve books in the back and glare at people talking too loudly in the study sections. "Hopefully you won't have to deal with anyone who's an idiot about library etiquette. That'd drive me nuts."
no subject
Date: 2019-05-13 08:43 pm (UTC)"There will always be a few people who can't follow the rules as they're written," she notes with a small smirk. "For all my disregard for them in various circumstances, I don't mind enforcing them in the library. The more people I help, the less likely it'll be that someone starts causing a scene." She pauses for a moment and leans in a little closer to murmur mischievously, "I'm very persuasive when I want to be. I'm sure I can talk at least a few trouble makers into better behavior."
Whether she's going to use scare tactics or sweet words will depend on the individual. So long as she gets results, Amelia doesn't care which one it has to be.
As the rogue leans back into her seat, the waitress arrives with their pizza. She sets it up on a little stand and offers each of the party members a plate with a bright "Enjoy!" before disappearing back into the restaurant. Amelia smiles and motions for her friends to have first pick of their slices.
"Can I ask you more about your wedding?" she asks as they all wait for their chosen slices to cool off. Her curious nature is getting the better of her again, but something as important as this feels like a thing Amelia should have more knowledge about to better support her friends. "All this talk of traditions has me wondering what an Earth wedding involves, other than the two people getting married, I mean."
no subject
Date: 2019-05-17 01:09 pm (UTC)Adia shakes her head a little at their exchange, although she is smiling. Leave it to Caspar to turn a library job into a bouncer-type position. She can't imagine that Amelia has had to deal with too many troublemakers, anyway. Micolash seemed to be the worst behaved, howling in the stacks and falling asleep in weird places, but she had a talk with him about that and presumably he is far better behaved now.
If she has other thoughts about Amelia's new job, they'll have to wait, because pizza! She serves herself a slice and hisses when when she tries to take a bite. Too hot! Ouch! Caspar gives her a look of droll concern. "Did you forget that you have to let it cool a little first?"
"Mmmf!" She takes a long, medicinal sip of lemonade. "It's been a while since I've had any and I'm hungry." While Caspar serves his own slice, she turns her attention to Amelia and the conversation to their wedding. "Of course you can, Amelia. What would you like to know? Ours is going to be very simple. We're holding it in a temple, but our friend Karl is going to officiate. He's a Captain, so he has the authority to marry people."
"He's also married to my sister," Caspar adds.
no subject
Date: 2019-05-19 05:24 pm (UTC)"Are people always married by captains?" she asks. A beat, and she quickly adds, "Or is it anyone in a position of authority who can marry two people? I don't know much about the structure of government on Atlantis, so I may be missing a few possibilities of people who could perform this kind of ceremony." She offers a self-deprecating smile and then tries a bite of her pizza. Still a bit too warm to eat, which means the rogue can ask a few more questions while she waits.
"Is family important to have family at your side when you get married?" She directs the question at both of her friends, but her eyes linger on Caspar for a few extra seconds before she shifts her gaze comfortably between the two of them again. "It was traditional in Masarra to have as much of your family present as possible since the ceremony was most often held in the middle of a large celebration." Nothing brings a large group of people together better than a party filled with food, drink, and laughter.
She laughs softly before continuing. "I've never seen people become more comfortable with a family they've never met before than I have at the few weddings I've attended. Even my hard-headed brother managed to loosen up before promising himself to his wife at his party, despite the fact that he was saying even that very morning that he didn't want to go through with it."
no subject
Date: 2019-05-20 05:10 pm (UTC)She asks because she is curious, and because she has learned not to assume anything about Masarra.
The importance of family at celebrations is something they do have in common, and that would normally bring a smile to her face, but Amelia's innocent question is an unexpected reminder of her loss. "Oh... yes, it is, but, um... well. Seth and Maggie will be there, and they're basically my family now. Some of Caspar's siblings will be there, too."
She takes another bite of pizza, and if it's still a little bit too hot, she powers through it, needing to concentrate on something else. Caspar watches her a moment, then looks at Amelia. Not accusatory, but there is ruefulness in his expression. It's a loaded topic, clearly.
"It won't be an issue for us, all my siblings love her. Some a little too much," he adds in annoyance, thinking especially of his sister Julia and how she continues to carry a torch for her very first human friend. "And Karl is absolutely dying to start calling Adia his sister-in-law. He calls me brother-in-law every chance he gets."
"That's because he likes you," Adia notes, her smile returning.
Caspar snorts dismissively. "He likes everyone."
"We're only having a few witnesses at the ceremony itself, but there will be more guests at the reception afterwards. Maggie's planning the whole thing."
no subject
Date: 2019-06-04 02:16 pm (UTC)The rogue pauses in her thoughts for a moment to clean her lips with a napkin, but anything she might have said falls away as she watches Adia speak. Dreams, that was a bad thing to ask, wasn't it? It wasn't her intention to bring up bad memories of Adia's family, but...
Her lips pull into a thin line as her friends move away from the posed question. Truly, she hadn't meant to bring down the mood, but it seems she managed it anyway. It's a skill Amelia wishes she didn't have, but there seems little way around it for now. Exhaling a small, silent sigh, she nods and catches onto another question to at least try to move them on from the pain so clearly associated with family and weddings.
"What kind of party is held after a wedding ceremony? Is it something that's always bigger than the ceremony itself?" It feels like the answer to the question would be obvious, so she quickly adds, "Depending on the station and popularity of the couple being married, people in Masarra will either celebrate for a short while together right after the ceremony or hold a larger party a day or two later. The celebration for the Duke of Masarra's wedding, for example, was held three days after the wedding and the entire city - visiting merchants, travelers, and ship workers included - were invited to it."

Date: 2019-06-05 05:04 pm (UTC)"The point is that everyone knows it," Caspar responds smugly. If the rings don't clue others in, the change of his last name to Costas will. He cannot wait to get that paperwork signed.
Caspar is not the best conversationalist, but he has enough grace to latch onto the change of subject Amelia offers and give his soon-to-be-wife a little longer to recover. God knows how awkward it is for him, to be indirectly responsible for the loss of Adia's family, the very people he otherwise would have done literally anything to earn the approval of, if that's what it took to marry her. "It's more casual than the ceremony so we feel comfortable inviting more people," he explains. "It's on that shared property between our cabins. Tables and chairs, a buffet-style meal, that sort of thing."
He finally takes a bite of pizza, having the patience to wait for it to be a reasonable temperature. It's good, but filling, so he'll probably stick to this one slice.
"Maggie loves planning parties," Adia adds with a fond smile. "She was the informal party planner on the Chiron. Birthdays, holidays, socials... any excuse, really. I think she's more excited about the reception than I am."
no subject
Date: 2019-06-12 08:21 pm (UTC)The rogue nods as she thinks about the open space between the cabins. "It seems like it would be a good space to host a lot of people," she agrees. "And if your friend enjoys planning, I'm certain she'll make it everything the two of you could want and more." A beat, and she adds with a smile, "I hope she doesn't get too excited and go farther than what the two of you are looking for." People who plan parties often do that on her world and the rogue can easily see their friend doing the same.
Pausing for a moment, Amelia quickly finishes off her first slice of pizza and goes for a second. Dreams this is so much better than she remembered after a Winter with only the basics available to her at any given time.
Now that much of the awkwardness has been cut by the change in subject, it's time to ask something the rogue is really interested in. "After the two of you are married on Atlantis, will you be hosting a party here in the Nexus as well? I have a feeling I'm not the only person who would love the chance to celebrate the occasion with you."
no subject
Date: 2019-06-13 05:03 pm (UTC)"It was either that or the green space behind Town Hall that's used for events, but it's far more convenient to invite people to us." Although she suspects Maggie would rise to the occasion if they changed the location. In fact, her friend could rise above and beyond the occasion, as Amelia comments, and there's a brief look of concern on her face before she shakes her head. "No... no, she knows the both of us pretty well by now. She'll keep it simple."
"I've got a handle on it," Caspar adds in reassurance. He's been the one pinning down the details with Maggie, making sure things don't get out of hand. He might have been called a spoilsport once or twice, but Maggie knows that he's also acting in Adia's best interest and has accommodated his mildly 'groomzilla' behavior.
Adia is in the middle of another bite of pizza when Amelia asks her final question. She hurriedly chews and swallows, although she has no idea what to say. She wants to give her Nexus friends a chance to celebrate, but the thought of planning a second party leaves her feeling a little nervous. "Um... well, I'm not sure..." She glances at Caspar, who is looking at her with raised eyebrows. "It's, um... I've never thrown a party myself, so..."
What a great non-answer. She blushes and returns to eating her pizza.

Date: 2019-06-25 12:16 am (UTC)"It's all right if you don't want to," she notes with a smile. "The decision is completely in your hands and no one will force you into something you don't want. If you simply want a quiet conversation with everyone you care about in turn after the wedding, then you should do that." There will still be gifts given as close to the wedding as possible, but Amelia highly doubts anyone would have a problem with Adia and Caspar taking time to themselves after they get married. The important thing is that their friends are finally doing what they've always wanted with one another. Little else matters after that.
no subject
Date: 2019-06-25 06:29 pm (UTC)Adia relaxes in relief when Amelia removes the pressure of an additional party in the Nexus. "It'd be nice to celebrate with my Nexus friends," she says, after swallowing her bite of pizza. "It wouldn't be something right away, if at all. We're not even getting a honeymoon, yet, there's too much work to be done."
"I suggested hacking Steve's PSA and putting up our wedding announcement but Adia vetoed me," Caspar comments off-handedly as he leans back in the booth.
"You did not, and of course I'd veto that, how are Nexus newcomers supposed to know what to do if that's what they're greeted with instead?" she responds, trying to look cross and failing. She's simply too amused by his audacity. "Besides, you know that you want to tell everyone personally."
Caspar blushes, but no, he can't disagree with that.
Adia finishes up her pizza and has another slice, but despite her big eyes, she's satisfied with just those two slices. Caspar has long since finished his one slice, leaving a sliver of crust on his plate. Once Amelia is done, they can head off to see her apartment and the changes that she's made for the better.
