Who's that pokémon?

Bucky Bird was in a bind.
For months, he had worked tirelessly to protect his friend and caretaker, Adia. She was a gentle human with a big heart, but these traits made her vulnerable. He needed to remain ever vigilant if he was going to keep her safe.
On his days with Candela, he trained as hard as he could to improve his abilities. Otherwise, he’d take to the skies, building up his wing strength and endurance. But it was not enough. He was still too small and too weak, and he felt no closer to evolving.
Sarah and Ethel recommended that he relax a little. The anti-violence field was back in place, the bad man who had injured Steve was gone. But Bucky knew better. The Nexus was full of bad humans who would hurt someone as sweet as Adia if given a chance.
He wouldn’t let them get that chance.
Things came to a head one day when a strange man tried to enter Steve’s apartment. Bucky was able to shoo him back out, but the episode left him rattled. He needed to be stronger in case the intruder returned!
It was time to take matters into his own wings if he was ever going to evolve. He had failed to keep Steve safe, he wasn’t going to let the same thing happen to Adia.
He was going to become the protector she deserved.

The local Poké Mart was the only place, aside from Steve’s apartment, that Bucky let his guard down. Its owner and the trainers who frequented it had become familiar faces. Plus there were always a few treats in it for him, and he got to socialize with other pokémon.
This particular shopping trip unfortunately wasn’t much fun. Adia was the only customer in the store, and she was having a lengthy discussion with the owner about polish for Ethel’s head and the best shampoo to cut down on Sarah’s summer shedding. Bored, Bucky waited outside, perched on a nearby streetlight.
That’s when he heard the sobbing.
Suspicious, he flew over to the alley behind the Mart where a man in a Team Skull beanie was harassing a young girl. She didn’t look human — not with horns and zubat wings growing out of her back — but she was clearly frightened, clutching her satchel and crying pale pink tears.
“Yo, hand over your poké balls, you little freak!” the man demanded, and Bucky immediately puffed up in outrage. He swooped in and landed between them, glaring daggers at the miscreant.
The thug looked down at the angry rufflet and laughed. “Some banged-up birdie thinks he can battle me?” Striking a pose, he began to rap:
“This rufflet’s gonna take a hit.
He thinks he’s tough, but I’m the — WAAAAGH!!!”
Bucky did not wait for the man to finish his stupid rhyme. He flew up and into his face, intending to scare him off. To his delight and the hoodlum’s misfortune, the battle rap had lowered the anti-violence field, allowing Bucky to get in a few good scratches as he tried to land on the man’s head and peck at him.
“Yo, get offa me!” the thief hollered, flailing his arms around. “You’re supposed to fight my pokémon, not me, you — no, no, not my face! Oh my god, NOT MY EYES!”
Screaming in terror, he pulled down his beanie as far as it could go and ran blindly into the night.
Bucky fluttered back to the ground gracefully and looked over at the girl, who was staring at him in awe. “You saved me, Mr. Rufflet! Thank you!” She dug into her satchel and pulled out a shiny rainbow candy. “Here, have this. It’s the least I can do.”
It was a rare candy, just the thing Bucky needed if he wanted to evolve. He hopped forward and delicately picked up the treat with his beak. It was deliciously sweet, but impossible to chew. Tucking it into his cheek, he chirped his thanks and even tolerated the girl patting him on the head before she left the alley.
Soon enough, he returned to his former roost to enjoy his reward.

Bucky was still sucking on the candy when Adia came out of the Mart with Sarah and Ethel in tow. “Sorry that took so long… Bucky? Do you have something in your mouth?”
Hurriedly, before she could intervene, he swallowed the last of the candy with a loud gulp.
And then without warning, he was engulfed in a powerful bright light. Bucky felt his body dissolve into energy, but it didn’t hurt. Far from it. It was relaxing and invigorating all at once.
The light was shaping him into something new.
it was over within seconds. When the light faded, he found himself standing much farther off the ground, staring into the surprised faces of his friends. He extended his wings and marveled at how far they reached. “Brave… iary?” he whispered to himself, looking over his new body.
Ethel was the first to get over her surprise, looking up at him with a proud smile. Sarah barked excitedly and ran circles around her transformed friend. Adia, however, was absolutely flabbergasted. “Bucky, you… you’re a braviary now! You evolved!”
Bucky folded back his wings and lifted his head proudly. He had finally done it! Now Adia was that much safer, with his new, larger form to protect her.
Adia’s look of wonder turned to concern. “But… you’re so big now. You won’t be able to sit on your perch anymore. And you’ll need more space to stretch out your wings… is Steve’s apartment going to be enough room for you?”
Uh. He hadn’t thought about that. His crest drooped a little as he looked away sheepishly, but Adia just laughed and gave him a fond smile.
“It’s okay, we’ll figure something out.” She reached out and gently brushed down his feathers. “You did this for me, didn’t you? To keep me safe?” Without waiting for an answer, she wrapped her arms around him in a warm hug. “Thank you.”
Bucky rested his head on her shoulder and sighed happily. “Brave.”
“Yes, you certainly are.” Adia petted him fondly before letting go and adjusting the strap of her messenger bag. “Let’s get back to Steve’s.” She giggled. “This will be quite the surprise for him, when he comes home. You’re nearly as tall as he is.”
Huh. He was, wasn’t he? Bucky chirruped and added a strut to his step, keeping pace with his friends. That was great news, as far as he was concerned.
Not only could he protect Adia, he could protect Steve, too.
